Major road repairs complete in Baie Verte peninsula
Repair work to provincial roads washed out along the Baie Verte Peninsula,
as a result of storms over the Labour Day weekend, is nearly complete, said Works,
Services and Transportation Minister Lloyd Matthews today. "Immediately following the
survey of damage, the Department of Works, Services and Transportation engaged contractors
in the area to begin emergency repairs.
"I travelled to the Baie Verte Peninsula last week with the Premier
and with Municipal Affairs Minister Art Reid to personally survey the damage," said
Minister Matthews. "At that time, government gave a commitment to do whatever
possible to assist communities in this emergency situation. I am pleased to report that
all the major repair work to provincial roads has been completed and a tender will be
called this week for other repair work."
In repairing provincial roads in the area, Works, Services and
Transportation has accrued costs of approximately $400,000. "These costs are
significant, however, the situation was urgent and required immediate attention."
