The following information was provided by WST Minister Lloyd Matthews earlier today during a media visit to a construction site on the Outer Ring Road:

Status Report on The Outer Ring Road

  • When complete, the Outer Ring Road will provide a thoroughfare around the city of St. John's. The project represents $68.2 million in road construction expenditures.

  • Since the project first got underway three years ago, approximately $20 million has been spent. This year, government has committed $15 million, bringing the total funding to $35 million after this year's construction season.

  • Between 60 and 65 per cent of the Outer Ring Road will be complete by the end of the construction season this year.

  • By fall of 1998, our goal is to have several portions of the Outer Ring Road open to traffic, in particular sections from Donovan's Industrial Park towards the Allandale Road interchange.

  • The completion date for the Outer Ring Road, in its entirety, will be 2002.
