Highway maintenance contracts awarded

Ernie McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador and MHA - Lake Melville, today announced, on behalf of Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, that two contracts have been awarded for highway maintenance in Labrador:

Labrador Construction Limited of St. John's has been awarded a $3,254,940 contract for summer and winter maintenance of approximately 300 kilometres of Route 500 between Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Churchill Falls.

Glenn Corporation Limited of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has been awarded a $980,000 contact for summer and winter maintenance of approximately 65 kilometres of road in the Northwest River/Happy Valley-Goose Bay area.

Both contracts have a start date of June 1, 1998 and are for a three-year period.

Mr. McLean said: "The Department of Works, Services and Transportation will monitor road conditions on Route 500 closely. The department has held meetings with users of Route 500 and will continue to consult with them on a regular basis to ensure that driving conditions are acceptable. Ongoing construction along the route will also result in an improved all-season road."
