Provincial government appointment to Regional Airport Authority - Deer Lake

The Minister of Works, Services and Transportation LIoyd Matthews today announced that Charlie McCarthy of Deer Lake has been appointed the provincial government representative to the board of directors for the Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority.

Mr. McCarthy was selected as the provincial nominee, bringing extensive experience in business and community affairs to the board of directors. Mr. McCarthy graduated from St. Henry School in Corner Brook and is retired from Canadian National Railways where he worked for 35 years.

Mr. McCarthy is active within the community as past-president of the Deer Lake Chamber of Commerce; chair of the Great Humber Community Futures; chair of the Humber Valley Residential Home and board member of the Deer Lake Senior Citizens. Mr. McCarthy also serves the community as the deputy mayor of Deer Lake.

Negotiations between Transport Canada and Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority officially began March 4, 1997 with the signing of a letter of intent to transfer the Deer Lake Airport. Negotiations are ongoing toward transfer of the airport into local control.
