The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys volleyball championships this weekend

Four provincial high school volleyball champions will be decided this coming weekend. The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation winds up its boys volleyball seasons with tournaments being held in Random Island, Glovertown, Carmanville and Avondale.

The A boys tournament is being hosted by Random Island Integrated and will see action from eight teams playing in a two division round robin. Division A consists of Random Island, Amos Comenius (Hopedale), St. Bernards All Grade and Sops Arm Central High. Seeing action in Division B will be Gill Memorial (Musgrave Harbour), St. Anne's (Conne River), St. Boniface (Ramea), and Our Lady of Labrador (West St. Modeste). The first round robin games will be played Thursday evening at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and continuing all day on Friday from 9:30 a.m. onward. The championship game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Glovertown Regional High and Smallwood Academy in Gambo will be co-hosting the boys 2A provincial volleyball championships. Eight teams will also be competing for top honours at this tournament. Division A will be Glovertown Regional High, North Shore Collegiate (Northern Bay), Cape John Collegiate (La Scie) and St. Augustine's High (Plum Point). Making up the B Division will be Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), King Academy (Harbour Breton), Smallwood Academy (Gambo) and Assumption High (Stephenville Crossing).

The tournament gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremonies followed by tournament play. The final round robin games will be played Saturday morning followed by the semi-finals, bronze and gold medal games.

Carmanville School is the host for the six team 3A provincial tournament. Vying for the coveted banner will be Carmanville School, Leo Burke Academy (Bishop's Falls), Southwest Arm Academy (Little Heart's Ease), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley's Island), Templeton Collegiate (Gillams) and Menihek High (Labrador City). The round robin tournament gets underway 9 a.m. Friday and continues through Saturday. The top four teams advance to the cross-overs with the championship games scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Roncalli High in Avondale and Bishop O'Neill Collegiate in Brigus are the host schools for the 4A provincial tournament. Eight teams have registered for the event. Division A will see competition between Roncalli High, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook). Vying for top honours in Division B will be Bishop O'Neill Collegiate, Bishops College (St. John's), Pasadena Academy and Lewisporte Regional High. Games will be played at both Roncalli and Bishop O'Neill gyms starting at 3:30 on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The provincial championship banner will be awarded to the winning team in each tournament. Gold and silver medals and the Keyin Sportsmanship Awards will also be presented at the conclusion of the tournament.

Keyin College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador are the official sponsors of these and all provincial high school athletic federation tournaments.
