Ontario Open Judo tournament

The Ontario Open Judo tournament took place this past weekend with over 400 athletes in attendance from all over Canada. The Ontario Open is one of the qualifying events for any judoka hoping to represent this country at the Olympics. Competition at the Ontario Open is of the highest calibre and provincial coach, Maurice Sheppard and trainer, Mike Kay, who accompanied the Newfoundland contingent were pleased by the efforts and results of our athletes. The next major tournament for our athletes is December 5 in Stephenville as the Indian Head club hosts the fall provincial tournament in preparation for the Canada Winter Games to be held in Corner Brook in February 1999.

Tom Gallant, our province's highest ranked referee at National 'A', and Aden White, president of the provincial association, vice president of Sport Newfoundland and a nationally ranked referee, also travelled to the Ontario Open where White was recommended for evaluation and possible promotion to the next level of national referee.

Nadia Bell from the St. John's School of Judo at I.J. Sampson School and Krista O'Brien from the Sankyo Club at Holy Cross School competed in the IJF junior event. Representatives of this province were; Gerry Young and Marco Chiaramonte from the MUN club, Krista O'Brien, JJ Coffey and John Kearley from the Sankyo Club, and Nadia Bell from the St. John's School of Judo.
