The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

1998 Canada Senior Games, Medicine Hat, Alberta

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is looking for teams and individuals interested in participating in the 1998 Canada Senior Games taking place in Medicine Hat, Alberta from August 19-21.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is the provincial contact for these games and it is expected that the sports and activities in these games will attract a number of Newfoundland and Labrador athletes and competitors. The games are for individuals 55 years of age and older.

The sports and age groups are:

  • Five Pin Bowling: Ladies singles 55+, 65+ and 75+ (years); Mens singles 55+, 65+ and 75+ (years), and an open mixed team competition 55+.

  • Carpet Bowling: Open team of four players 55+ and 70+.

  • Darts: Ladies singles 55+ and 70+, Mens singles 55+ and 70+. Each category is two per province.

  • Floor Curling: Open Team 55+ and 70+. Each team is made up of four people per province.

  • Golf: Ladies Callaway System 55+, 65+, 75+, Mens Callaway System 55+, 65+, and 75+; ladies low gross 55+, 65+, 75+; and Mens low gross 55+, 65+ and 75+. Each of these age levels is limited to one competitor from each province.

  • Horseshoes: Ladies singles 55+; Mens singles 55+ and 65+. Each of the three categories listed under each event is for one competitor from each province.

  • Lawn Bowling: Ladies pairs 55+; Mens pairs 55+; ladies pairs 70+ and Mens pairs 70+. Each category is for two competitors from each province.

  • Shuffleboard: Open doubles 55+ and open doubles 70+. Each category is open for two competitors per province.

  • Snooker: Ladies single 55+; Mens single 55+ and mens single 70+. Each category is open to two competitors per province.

  • Swimming: Male and Female 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+ and 75+. Each category is open to one competitor per event.

  • Track and Field: Male and female 55-59 years, 60-64 years; 65-69 years; 70+ and predicted walk - 2000 Male and female 55 years plus.

  • Tennis: Mens doubles 55+; Ladies doubles 55+, Mens doubles 65+; Ladies doubles 65+; Mens doubles 75+ and Ladies doubles 75+. Each tennis category is limited to two competitors per province.

  • Slow Pitch: 55+, 14 per team per province; and 65+ (14 per team per province).

In addition to the sports list, there is a competition for Contract Bridge - open pairs (four pairs) 55 years plus. Cribbage - open doubles (six pairs per province) 55 years plus; and Military Whist - open teams 55+ (two teams of four per province).

There is also a Cultural Activity, Old Time Fiddling Competition in two categories 55+ and 65+. Each category is limited to four people per province, and in Old Time Dance competition in two categories - open partner 55+ (two couples) and open partner competitions 65+ (two couples).

To finish off the competition there is a Visual Arts and Crafts Activity. Under this category there are: hand knitted articles, large flat hand knitted articles; crocheted articles, petit point/needlepoint; counted cross stitch; embroidery; individual hand stitched quilt; group hand stitched quilt; soft toys, ethnic needle arts; weaving; oil/acrylic painting; water colour painting, drawing; calligraphy; woodworking, hand carving projects; hand built or wheel thrown ceramics, poured ceramics; colour photography; black and white photography and ethnic arts.

The registration fee for the games is $60 per participant and $45 for any non-participating guests. The games society, however, will reimburse each registered competitor $40 for hotel/motel accommodation for the entire games and meal tokens to the value of $45.00. The registration deadline for the 1998 Canada Senior Games is July 1, 1998.
