Volunteer of the year

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking nominations for the 1997/1998 Frank W. Graham Volunteer of the Year Award.

Angela King, Chairperson of the Volunteer of the Year Committee, stated that nomination forms were forwarded to the provincial sport organizations in mid-February. The winner of this year's award will be announced and the award presented during Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's Annual General Meeting Luncheon scheduled for May 9 in St. John's.

King explained the nominating process. She said: "Regional winners will be chosen from nominations received from our five regions of the province. The regions include Northern (Labrador), Western, Central, Southern and Eastern. Each of the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's five regional directors will hold meetings in their area to determine a regional winner. The names of the regional winners will then be forwarded to the provincial committee, and through a voting procedure a provincial winner will be declared. During the Volunteer of the Year Luncheon each regional winner will receive a Volunteer of the Year framed certificate and the provincial winner will receive the Frank W. Graham Memorial Award."

King also said: "We are again requesting each provincial sport organization to nominate individuals, from all areas of the province, who they feel are deserving of this award. Individuals who can be nominated include those people who volunteer at the community, provincial and national levels. Volunteers can include such individuals as local league personnel, executive members, coaches, managers - anyone who is making an outstanding contribution to sport. This nomination in not limited to volunteers who gain notoriety at the provincial and national level."

Nominations will be accepted up to 4 p.m., April 24 in order to permit time for the final selection process. Provincial sport organizations and individuals who are interested in obtaining information about this year's nomination process can contact either their Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Director (Northern - Ken Anthony in Happy Valley-Goose Bay: Western - Wayne Simon in Stephenville, Central - Bill Burke in Grand Falls-Windsor; Southern - Gerard Greene in Clarenville; and Tom Godden in St. John's) or the provincial office at telephone (709) 576-4932; fax (709) 576-7493.
