The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

High school hockey championships

Two high school hockey champions will be crowned this coming weekend. Thirteen teams will be competing in two tournaments to decide the 4A and 3A high school champions. In addition to receiving the championship banner, the winners of the 4A title will be awarded the historic and prestigious Boyle Trophy.

Holy Heart of Mary High Highlanders of St. John's are the hosts for the 4A tournament. The tournament will be played at Brother O'Hehir Arena with the exception of two games being played at Prince of Wales Arena. The tournament will feature the following teams: defending champions Ascension Collegiate Astros (Bay Roberts), the hosts, Holy Heart Highlanders, Gander Collegiate Concordes, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Grand Falls Academy, St. Stephen's Spartans (Stephenville) Gonzaga Vikings (St. John's) and Roncalli Cardinals (Avondale).

Round robin action gets under way 9 a.m., Thursday with five games scheduled throughout the day. Opening ceremonies are for 5:30 p.m. Seven round robin games will be played on Friday with the top two teams from each division advancing to the semi-finals slated for 10 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday. The championship game starts 6 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, J.M. Olds Collegiate of Twillingate is the host school for the 3A championships. All games will be held at the George Hawkins Arena in Twillingate. Five teams have qualified through zone, regional and provincial play for the event. Teams include: Lester Pearson Memorial of Wesleyville, Leo Burke Academy of Bishop's Falls, Baie Verte High and Harriot Curtis Collegiate of St. Anthony.

Games get under way, Thursday at 11 a.m. and will continue on Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Cross overs will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with the championship game scheduled for 4 p.m.

The High School Athletic Federation is proud to have Keyin Technical College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador as sponsors of the federation and these provincial tournaments.
