The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial girls volleyball championships this weekend

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation will conclude its pre-Christmas program this coming weekend with four provincial tournaments. The School Milk Foundation and Keyin College, as official sponsors of the federation will assist the convenors in staging the volleyball championships.

The A girls volleyball is being hosted by Gill Memorial Academy in Musgrave Harbour and Lumsden School Complex. A total of 10 teams will compete in the two division set-up playing out of Lumsden will be the host, Christ the King School (Rushoon), A.R. Scammell (Change Islands), Sops Arm Central High and Greenwood Academy (Milltown). The B division will be played at Gill Memorial and will see action from the host, Jakeman All Grade (Kings Cove) and J.C. Erhardt (Makkovik). Round robin games will get underway Friday at 11 a.m. at both venues and continue through to Saturday. The top two teams from each division will meet in the cross-overs at noon and 1 p.m. on Saturday with the two winners advancing to the 3 p.m. gold medal match.

North Shore Collegiate in Northern Bay is the host school for the 10 team, two division 2A girls championship. Division A consists of Grandy's River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), Hollands Memorial (Norris Point), Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Stella Maris High (Trepassey) and the host school. Competing in division 2 will be King Academy (Harbour Breton), St. Michael's School (Arnold's Cove), Bishop O'Neill Collegiate (Brigus), Holy Cross All Grade (St. Albans) and St. Joseph's Academy (Lamaline). Games will be played at North Shore Collegiate and Cabot Academy gyms starting at 9 a.m. on Friday. The semi-finals and championship match are scheduled for Saturday.

Baie Verte High School is the host for the 3A provincial championships. Eight teams will compete in the tournament which will be played at Baie Verte High School and Middle School. Division A will see action from the host school, Menihek High (Labrador City), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop's Falls) and Musgravetown High School. Division B will feature Templeton Collegiate (Gilliams), Pasadena Academy, Botwood Collegiate and Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay). The first matches will be played 1 p.m. on Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Baie Verte High.

Bishop's College in St. John's will play host to nine other teams for the 4A provincial championships. In division A the following teams will compete for top spot - Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Marystown Central High, Lewisporte High, Regina High (Corner Brook) and St. Michael's High (Bell Island). Division B will see the host, competing against Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Roncalli Central High (Avondale). Start time is 2 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Bishop's College.
