The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Basketball Teams in Nationals

The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association will have seven teams competing in national competition commencing this Friday, July 31 and extending through until August 8.

St. John's will play host to the Eastern Canadian Midget (Under 15) Boys and Girls Tournament with a total of eight teams involved. NFLD will have two teams entered in the girls division and one team in the boys. Athletes competing in NFLD Girls "A" Team include: Theresa Butler, Lindsey Power, Leslie Bradshaw and Stephanie Wade of St. John's; Nikki Rogers and Tracey King from Torbay; Danielle Williams of Bay Bulls; Tara Croft of Mount Pearl; Michelle Bartlett and Raleen Walsh from the Goulds; Claudette Conway of St. Bride's; Melissa Molloy and Karyn Power from Trepassey; Jacinta Loder of St. Lawrence and Brenda Highmore of Pasadena. The head coach for the program is Doug Partridge and the assistant is Amy O'Rielly. The NFLD Girls "B" Team consists of Holly Best of Petty Harbour; Amy Brazil of Renews; Laura Emberely of Witless Bay; Shivonne Costello, Katie Greene, Caroline Mulcahey, Allison Rankin, Stephanie Tee, Stacey Sweeney and Jennifer Tobin of Mount Pearl; Shannonn Hayden, Ashley Mercer, and Megan Rideout of the Goulds; and Karolyn Sullivan of Calvert. The head coach for the team is Anne Marie Tobin and the assistant is Sara Temple. The NFLD Midget Boys Team includes: George English of St. Brides; Bruce Power of Admirals Beach; Glen Seaborn of Corner Brook; Chris Doyle of Mobile; Stephen Stead of Mount Pearl; Robin Power and Jamie Follett of Trepassey; and Stephen King, Jeff Alyward, Ethan Gill, Joel Koops, George Mammen, Matthew Wells and Wayne Devereaux of St. John's; and Evan Constantine of Dunville. Coaches for the team include David Constantine, Br. Martin Cull, Peter Benoite and Pam Constantine.

The Junvenile Boys and Girls teams are off to Prince Edward Island this weekend to compete in the Eastern Canadian Juvenile (under 17) Championships. Athletes on the girls team include: Amy Dalton of Harbour Main; Jessica Ryan and Joanne McNeil of Trepassey; Maureen Murrin of Shoe Cove; Allison Osmond of Port aux Basques; Jenine Browne and Elizabeth Dohey of St. Bride's; Jackie Chubbs of Placentia; Heather Dawe of Gander; Tara Jabobs of Deer Lake; Karen Hynes of Mount Pearl; Sayer Walsh of Conception Harbour; Renee McGrath of St. John's and Laura White of Kippens. The head coach of the team is Tami Pennell with assistants Debbie Shortall and Anne Murrin. The boys team includes: Peter Miles, Jamie Courtney, Allen Martin, Mike Ash, Solomon Baker, and David Wickens of Mount Pearl; Trevor MacDonald of St. Catherine's; Terry Sutton of Trespassey; Mike Harvey and Darren Hoyles of Deer Lake; Mike English of St. Bride's; and Mark Tobin, Ryan Power and Robert Learmouth of St. John's. The coaching staff include Randy Ash and Sharon Ash.

The men's and ladies (under 19) teams are competing in Nova Scotia at the Junior National Championships from August 3 - 8. Members of the men's team include Matthew Chapman, John Harvey, Jeremy Kielly, Mike Power, and Andrew Sinclair of St. John's; Scott Conway of Mount Pearl; Kevin English of Angel's Cove; Blair Kennedy and Chad Pennell of Trepassey; Greg Winter of Portugual Cove/St. Phillips and Steve Williams of Corner Brook. The head coach is Gary Sooley and the assistant is Mike Sooley. The ladies team consists of Sandi Ennis of Placentia; Kate Flynn of Paradise; Kerri Highmore of Pasadena; Jeanine Vickers of Witless Bay; Katie Mulcahy of Mount Pearl; Jillian Abbott, Vickie King, Amy Pryse Phillips, Melissa Skanes, Erika Stokes, Valerie Taylor and Laura Wellon of St. John's. The coaches for the program include Paul Byrne and Michelle Healey.
