Claude Pike heads target shooting group

The Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association last week elected well-known target shooter and shooting coach Claude Pike to head up the association for the next year. The shooting association, whose fortunes have been up-again-down-again of late, has just wound up its 1997-98 year with one of its best performances in recent years, and the election of Claude Pike to the presidency is an expression of confidence in the future of the target shooting sports in Newfoundland.

A long time supporter of, and participant in, the shooting sports, Pike expressed his pleasure at election to the top office of the association and looks forward to continued success for his sport which has many casual participants but a relatively small group of competitive target shooters. Outgoing president Ray Hynes was also pleased with the progress made by the association in the last two years, especially in the monthly weekend courses at centers across the province and the increased activity in the participating local clubs.

Jim Boone of Mount Pearl and the Huskies shooting club, was elected to the role of vice president. The role of treasurer was taken by Jim Piercey, and Mark Hynes of Bristol's Hope was chosen as secretary. Also elected to the board of directors was Karl Piercey of Outer Cove, Shawn Dyke of Gander, Doug Fowlow of Stephenville and the Stephenville Shooting Club, Gord Parsons and Bill Testu, both of Labrador City and the North Star Gun Club, and Ray Hynes of Bristol's Hope and the Trinity South Rod and Gun Club.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association is the provincial sport governing body for the target shooting sports which include the shotgun sports of trap, skeet, and sporting clay; the pistol disciplines of standard, rapidfire, and free pistol; the smallbore rifle disciplines of Canadian sporting rifle and Olympic free rifle; and the more recent airgun disciplines in rifle and pistol. The association works closely with, and attempts to coordinate the efforts of the local clubs to promote the shooting sports. Not all rod and gun clubs and shooting clubs in the province participate in competitive target shooting, but those that do find the provincial association a useful ally.
