Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association (NLVA)
Annual General Meeting - 1998
The NLVA will be holding their AGM this weekend, June 12-13, in Gander.
During the weekend, the meetings will take the opportunity to review and discuss the past
years activities through the presentation of reports. There will also be a presentation
and discussion of a Provincial Volleyball Coaching Symposium to occur in late September
1998, bidding on tournaments for the 1998-99 season and as well the election of officers
for the association.
The association's provincial awards will also be presented during the
weekend at a lunch on Saturday from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. The finalists have been selected in
each category as follows:
Reg Soper Memorial Award - Dedication to Volleyball
Finalists:
Eric Hiscock, Bell Island - This year Eric coached five club teams,
is coach of the Midget Plus Provincial Girls Team, coached his region at the Newfoundland
and Labrador Winter Games and as well the Senior Ladies Team in the St. John's Ladies
League. Along with his coaching, Eric serves on the NLVA executive, has hosted two
provincial championships and several invitational tournaments.
Todd Martin - assistant coach of the Memorial University Women's team
that had a record of 17-1 and went all the way to the AUAA semi-finals.
- Vice President Volleyball Canada.
- National rated official and attended the 1998 National Senior Championship in Winnipeg.
- Member of the 1999 National Juvenile Organizing Committee.
Terry Mosher - Coached the 1997 Ladies Canada Games team that
finished fourth at the Pre Canada Games tournament and sixth at the Canada Games equalling
the best performance from the past.
- Coached Queen Elizabeth High School that won high school zones, second at regionals and
fifth at provincials.
- Coach for Sabres club and co-organizer for the club.
- Coach of CBS team that competed in two provincial and five invitational tournaments
during the year.
- Coach of the 1998 Midget Provincial Team.
Coach of the Year Award
Finalists
Terry Mosher - Head coach of the 1997 Women's Canada Games team, who
placed sixth at the games which ties the best ever finish for a volleyball team from
Newfoundland. The team also travelled to Montreal, Quebec for a pre-Canada Games
tournament earlier that summer.
- Coach of the CBS Sabres Girls Midget Team.
- Coach of the Queen Elizabeth Regional High School girls team who placed first at zones,
second at regionals and fifth at provincials.
- Head coach of the 1998 Midget Girls Provincial Team, who will travel to the Quebec Plus
Championships and the 1998 Eastern Elite Championships this summer.
Mike Murrin - Coach of the Discovery Collegiate Senior Girls
Volleyball team who placed first at Volleyfest 97 and second at the 4A Girls
Championships, the NLVA Junior Ladies Championships and the NLVA Juvenile A Girls
Championships.
- Coach of the Discovery Collegiate Midget Boys team who captured bronze at both the 1998
Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games and the NLVA Midget A Boys Provincials.
Dennis Lush - Coach of two junior high teams, two midget teams (A/B)
and one high school team which are all a part of the Loopers Volleyball Club.
- Senior high school team placed first at the 3A Provincial High School Championships.
- Midget A team finished with gold at the Midget A Provincial Volleyball Championships and
the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.
Bob Alcock - Coached senior girls and boys volleyball teams at
Roncalli this year. The senior boys high school team won the provincial 4A title and also
won gold at Volleyfest 97 and Abitibi-Price without losing a match. The boys team won gold
at the Provincial Juvenile A Championships and bronze at the Provincial Junior Mens
Championships.
- Coached the Roncalli Girls Midget team who received silver at the Midget A Girls
Provincials.
Wayne Sheppard Memorial Award - Senior Female Player of the
Year
Finalists
Susan Mosher, Member of the Memorial University Women's Varsity
Volleyball team that finished the AUAA with a 17-1 record.
- Selected AUAA second team all-star.
- Finished in seventh place in kills in the AUAA league statistics.
- Member of the Memorial University junior team that won the 1998 Provincial Junior
Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at the 1998 Provincial Junior Championships.
- Member of the 1997 Canada Games team.
- Winner of a Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Federation travel scholarship.
Cheryl Oldford - Member of the Memorial University Women's Varsity
Volleyball team that finished the AUAA season with a 17-1 record.
- Selected AUAA first team all star.
- Selected as Memorial University Women's Volleyball team Most Valuable Player for the
1997-98 season.
- Member of the Memorial University Junior team that won the 1998 Provincial Junior
Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at the 1998 Provincial Junior Championships.
- Member of the 1997 Canada Games team.
- Played in the 1998 Senior A Championships with Hickman's.
Cindy Walsh - Member of the Memorial University Women's Varsity
Volleyball team that finished the AUAA season with a 17-1 record.
- Selected as AUAA second team all star.
- Finished in first place in digs in the AUAA league statistics.
- Finished in seventh place in digs in the CIAU league statistics.
- Represented Newfoundland at the 1997 Beach Championship in Ontario with partner Carla
Edwards.
- Played in the 1998 Senior A Championships with Easy Street Pub.
Wayne Sheppard Memorial Award - Senior Male Player of the Year

Robbie West Memorial Award - Junior Player of the Year
Finalists
Tommy Kelly - Member of the Roncalli Volleyball team winning several
tournaments including the 4A High School Volleyball Championships, Volleyfest, and the
Provincial Juvenile A Championships. The team also won bronze at the Provincial Junior
Men's Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at the Provincial Junior Men's and Juvenile A Men's
Championships.
- Selected MVP of his juvenile team.
Keith Kelly - Member of the Roncalli Volleyball team that has won
many tournaments this season including the 4A High School Championships, Volleyfest and
the Provincial Juvenile A Championships. The team also won bronze at the Provincial Junior
Men's Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at the Provincial Junior Men's Championships.
- Selected 1997-98 MVP for the Roncalli High School Volleyball team.
David Winsor - Member of the Loopers Volleyball team which has won
several volleyball titles this season. Some include: 3A Provincial High School
Championships, the Provincial Midget A Championships and the Newfoundland and Labrador
Winter Games. The team also placed seventh at the Eastern Canadian Championship and third
at the Provincial Juvenile A Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at both the Midget A Provincials and the Juvenile A
Provincials.
Robbie West Memorial Award - Junior Female Player of the Year
Finalists
Andrea Feltham - Member of the Herdman Collegiate Women's Volleyball
team and the Humber Valley Volleyball Club.
- Herdman Collegiate won gold at the Provincial 4A Championships.
- The Humber club won gold at the Provincial Juvenile A Championships.
- Andrea was selected to the all star team at the Juvenile A Provincials.
Erin McCormack - A member of the Regina High School team, the Humber
Valley Midget team and the Newfoundland Midget Elite team.
- The Humber Midget team won the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games and the Provincial
Midget A Championships and received bronze at the Provincial Juvenile Championships.
- The Newfoundland Midget Elite won the Atlantic Championships.
Susan Penney - Captain of the Discovery Collegiate Senior Girls team
which won gold at Volleyfest 97 and placed second at the 4A High School Championships, the
Provincial Junior A Championships and Juvenile A Championships.
- Selected to the all star team at the Junior A and Juvenile A Championships, as well as
MVP at the D.C. Invitational.
- Member of the 1997 Canada Games team.
Community Development Award
Finalists
Islanders Volleyball Club - (Eric Hiscock, Bell Island)
- Eric has been instrumental in developing the sport of volleyball on Bell Island.
- Coached five teams this season.
- Junior high team won provincial gold.
- Midget team won the right to represent its region in the Newfoundland and Labrador
Winter Games.
- Hosted two provincial championships.
- Volleyball is continually growing on Bell Island and through the dedication of Eric and
the club, the sport of volleyball, the number of players and fans has grown considerably
there.
Roncalli High School - (Conception Bay Center)
- This year had the highest number of teams, coaches, players, teachers, students and
parental involvement in the 30 year history of the school and community.
- Entered four teams in Volleyfest 97.
- Bantam boys won silver at the Provincial Bantam Championships.
- Midget girls won silver at the Provincial Midget A Championships.
- Juvenile boys won goal at the Provincial Juvenile A Championships.
- Junior men won bronze at the Provincial Junior Championships.
- High school boys team won gold at Volleyfest 97 and at the Provincial High School
Championships.
- Teams also participated in other tournaments such as midget boys, bantam girls, and
senior high girls.
- Tremendous support by parents, fans and community.
CBS Sabres Volleyball Club
- Obtained federal funding and operated a six week program during the summer of 1997
- Entered seven teams in Volleyfest 97.
- Held a Junior High Challenge in December with 29 teams.
- Entered 21 teams in provincial championships at all levels and winning the following:
silver, boys junior high; silver, boys midget A; silver, boys juvenile B; silver, boys
Winter Games; gold, prebantam eastern girls; silver and bronze, eastern prebantam boys;
gold in senior A mens;
- Five players from CBS made the Canada Games Volleyball team.
- Hosted four provincial tournaments.
- Built outdoor court.
- Huge number of players, coaches, parents and teachers involved in the program.
Team of the Year Award
Finalists
1997 Women's Canada Games Team
- Winner of the 1997 Senior A Provincial Championships.
- Competed at the 1997 pre Canada Games Tournament in Montreal, Quebec finishing with a
2-3 record.
- The Women's Canada Games Team tied a best ever finish for a Newfoundland volleyball team
with a final placing of sixth. In the round robin, Newfoundland upset Saskatchewan in and
exciting five game match, and later defeated Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island
and went on to finish the round robin with a 3-2 record, which gave them a birth in the
medal round.
- Eleven of the members of this team have been, or are current members of the varsity
volleyball teams at six different post-seconday institutions in this country.
Roncalli Boys High School Team
- Won the following tournaments this season: Roncalli Invitational; Volleyfest;
Abitibi-Price Invitational; Trinity Conception 4A Regionals; Provincial 4A Championship;
Bronze medal, Provincial Junior Men's championships.
- It is worth noting that in the three major high school tournaments, which were
Volleyfest, Abitibi-Price and the 4A Provincials, the team did not lose a match.
Memorial University Women's Volleyball Team
- Finished the regular season of the AUAA women's volleyball league in second place, with
a 17-1 win-loss record. This included a 17 match winning streak.
- The team lost a two and a half hour five game match to the University of Moncton in the
AUAA playoffs.
- Three members of the Sea-Hawks were selected as members of the AUAA all star teams.
Susan Mosher and Cindy Walsh were second team all stars, while Cheryl Oldford was selected
as a member of the first all star team.
- Power hitter Cindy Walsh finished first in the AUAA in digs and seventh in the CIAU.
- Team members Robin Upshall, Susan Mosher and Denise Joy finished in the top 10 kills
statistics.
- Seven members went on to play for the MUN Juniors and won the Provincial Junior
Championship, where three of the players, Susan Mosher, Cheryl Oldford and Lynn Taylor
were selected as all stars.
