Scholarship winners

On May 9 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, at their Annual General Meeting, named the scholarship winners. A total of 18 scholarships were awarded: sixteen $500 scholarships and two Air Atlantic return airfares (within Atlantic Canada).

The winners of the $500 scholarships are:

$500 Scholarship Winners

Sarah Arnott: Sarah is especially known in soccer circles even though she is also active in both volleyball and basketball. Sarah has been playing soccer for 11 years. While attending Bishop's College, she captured the Senior Soccer M.V.P. title for three successive years (1995 - 1997). This past year Sarah was a member of the MUN Ladies Soccer Team and was twice chosen player of the game during AUAA play.

Peter Benoite: Peter is active in both basketball and cross country, but it is his basketball that brings him to the forefront. Peter has been at the Junior Nationals Eastern Canadians, Canada Games, AUAA's and National Team Tryouts. Peter has been named as MVP during AUAA play. He has also been named as a League All Star and as a First Team All Canadian. Peter was also a Howard Mackie nominee, being nominated as Conference Athlete of the Year.

Matthew Bramwell: Fast pitch softball is synonymous with the name of Matthew Bramwell even though he is also active in basketball. Matthew has been involved in fast pitch softball for 12 years. On the local scene, he has been an MVP in league play on many occasions. He was the top pitcher in the junior league in 1995 and 1997. He rose to the position of top batter in the junior league in 1995 and 1996. Matthew attended the Eastern Canadians in 1993, the Midget Nationals in 1993 and 1994 and more recently the Junior Nationals in 1996 and 1997. Matthew is presently training for this years'junior nationals.

Gerald Butt: Gerald has been active in the sport of baseball for the past 14 years. Gerald was a member of our provincial team at the 1992 and 1993 Midget Nationals. He attended the Team Canada Tryouts in 1993. Gerald was a junior team member at the Junior Nationals in 1994 and a senior team member at the 1996 Senior Nationals. Gerald has the distinction of being drafted by the New York Yankees in 1994.

Jonathan Dale: Jonathan is a noted squash player, having participated in the sport for the past six years. Jonathan attended the Junior Nationals in 1996 and 1997. He placed sixth at the 1997 Nationals. He was winner of the Newfoundland Open in 1997 and placed seventh at the 1997 Ontario Closed Championships. As a member of Western's Varsity Squash Team, Jonathan participated in the NCAA finals in March of this year.

Raeleen Dunne: Throughout her school years Raeleen has been an active volleyball, basketball and soccer player, having spent most of her time in soccer (13 years). As early as 1990, Raeleen has been a national competitor. In that year Raeleen was a member of our National Juvenile Basketball Team. In 1991, she was a member of our Canada Games Squash Team. From that time onward her accomplishments are especially noteworthy in soccer. In 1996, Raeleen was a university Soccer All Star in AUAA and CIAU competition. In 1997, she was honoured as an Academic All Canadian. She was Acadia's Female Athlete of the year and also named Top Defender in the senior soccer league in St. John's for 1997.

Tracy Hussey: A swimmer for 10 years, but her last seven years of cross country, and track and field have brought Tracy her greatest recognition in sporting circles. In 1997, Tracy won a silver medal at the Canada Summer Games; she was Provincial Champ in the 5 km Racewalk. Tracy is presently training for the upcoming National Track and Field Competitions scheduled for Montreal in July.

Robert Jewer: Robert is active in both track and field and cross country and has been competing at many levels for the past five years. In 1997, Robert competed in the AUAA Cross Country Championships, in the CIAU Cross Country Championships and the 1997 Aileen Mcagher International Track Classic. He has competed at the 1996 Newfoundland Summer Games and the 1997 Provincial Track and Field Championships. He represented Newfoundland at the 1997 Canada Summer Games. He was named the 1996 and 1997 Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association Junior Male Athlete. Robert is presently training to earn a spot on a National Track and Field Team to represent Canada.

Leeanne Kelland: Leeanne has been a competitive swimmer for the past eight years. Cross country and track and field takes her back nine years, and for the past two years she has been competing in both slide seat and fixed seat rowing. In 1996, Leeanne participated in Henley Rowing and also rowed for our province at the Canada Cup. She also rowed at the 1997 Canada Cup for our province. As a swimmer, Leeanne represented our province on our Canada Games Team in 1993. She attended the Youth Nationals in 1994 and the Junior Nationals in 1995. More recently, she was named a finalist at the AUAA's and also qualified for the Junior Nationals.

Patrick Lake: Volleyball, basketball and hockey have played a large part in Patrick's athletic years. From 1993 - 1997, Patrick participated in the High School Four A Tournaments. He participated in the Juvenile Provincials from 1994-1997 and also made his way to the Eastern Canadian Midgets from 1993 - 1995. While in high school, Patrick was Male Athlete of the Year for the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation.

Krista Manning: Krista is very well known in tennis circles having made her mark provincially in the Atlantics, in the Eastern Canadians nationally and internationally. During her 12 years in tennis Krista has captured numerous titles. Most recently, Krista has been ranked Best Pepperdine (with a record of 8 - 1) playing #3 position with a senior. She won both singles and doubles matches against Long Beach, California.

Maria Maunder: Maria has been swimming for seven years but it is her 10 years of rowing that has brought her significant recognition. Maria has rowed in the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, the World's University Games and numerous well known regattas. In the Olympic Games, Maria was a silver medalist in the Women's Eight. At the head of the Charles Regatta she was a gold medalist in Women's Championship Singles. At the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, Maria took gold in both the women's singles and doubles.

Chris McNeil: Mountain biking, road racing and cross country running keep Chris in great shape. Chris was undefeated in the Newfoundland Mountain Bike Races in 1997. He currently holds six provincial cycling titles. Chris placed second in the National Triathlon Competition. Chris placed 32 in the Top Amateur Category at the World Cup Mountain Biking Championships. He also helped the Newfoundland Cycling Team to a fifth place overall finish at the 1997 Canada Games.

Ann Murrin: Ann has been a competitive athlete in basketball, volleyball, softball and rugby. It is for basketball that she has gained most recognition. As a member of MUN's Varsity Basketball Team, Ann has seen considerable action a the AUAA and the AIAU levels. She was named the AUAA Rookie of the Year. At the CIAU level, Ann has been included as an All-Canadian Rookie team member. In 1997, Ann was named the Molson Athlete of the Year for St. John's.

Melissa Skanes: In sporting circles Melissa has competed competitively in basketball, soccer and volleyball. In 1995, Melissa competed in the Soccer Snickers National Cup. In 1995 and 1996, Melissa was again a national competitor but is was at the Junior Nationals in basketball that she made her mark. Melissa was also a member of the Newfoundland Basketball Team that competed at the 1997 Canada Games. This past year saw Melissa display her skills as she played with the Memorial Lady Seahawks Basketball Team.

Tanya Taylor: Tanya has been swimming competitively for 13 years and in that time has earned her place in Competitive Swimming. She swam at the Junior Nationals in 1995, the Can Arm Challenge in 1995, 1996 and 1997, and the Eastern Cup in 1995 and 1997. In February, 1998 she was a four time finalist at the AUAA's and won bronze with her third place finish in the 200 Butterfly. Tanya has been named an All Academic Canada for 1995 - 1996 and 1996 - 1997.

Trina Burry: Basketball, football and ball hockey are among the sports that Trina has been a competitor, but it is her 14 years of softball that has brought her much acclaim. As early as 1995 Trina competed in the Eastern Canadian Softball Tournament. She participated in the Maritime Tour in 1996 and 1997. In 1997, Trina's softball saw her play in the Canada Games for Newfoundland. She has also captured the distinction of being the top pitcher in regular league play.

Susan Mosher: Susan is active in volleyball, badminton and soccer. In 1995, she represented our province in the sport of badminton at the Canada Games. In 1996, she participated in the Junior Nationals and the National Team Challenge Cup. As a member of MUN's Varsity Volleyball Team, Susan was nominated as Rookie of the Year in 1996 - 1997. She also tied for Senior Women's Player of the Year in the NLVA for the 1996 - 1997 season. In 1997, Susan competed in the Canada Games and during the 1997 - 1998 season she was named a second Team All Star in the Women's AUAA Volleyball.
