The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The St. John's Figure Skating Club will play host to more than 400 skaters, coaches, and parents who will be attending the 1998 North Atlantic Petroleum Precision Skating Championships at Memorial Stadium this weekend.

The 19 teams from St. John's, Mount Pearl, Conception Bay North, Corner Brook, Southern Shore and Lewisporte will be taking part in the 17th consecutive year for this competition.

Competition will take place in four categories: Juvenile (comprising 12-24 skaters under the age of 12 years); Novice (12-24 skaters under 15 years); Junior (12-24 skaters between 12 and 18 years), and Adult (12-24 skaters 21 years or older).

Opening ceremonies are Friday, 7 p.m. with competition in the Junior Short Event starting at 8:30.

Competition on Saturday will from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with medals being presented at 2 p.m.

The Cornell Trophy will be presented to the team demonstrating the best unison while the Butt Trophy will be presented to the Most Spirited Team.

The top three teams in each event will earn the right to represent Newfoundland at the 1998 Canadian Precision Championships to be held March 5 to 8, 1998 in Ottawa.
