Gambo New Year's Eve celebrations mark start of Soiree '99 year

The Town of Gambo, birthplace of Joseph R. Smallwood, will kick off the start of 1999 with a New Year's Eve Gala to mark the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador's confederation with Canada. The event coincides with similar festivities planned for the St. John's waterfront.

Gambo will be a focal point for several Soiree '99 events and activities throughout the year, including the Swiler's Festival, the Smallwood Confederation Symposia along with the Senior's Confederation Conference, and the official opening of the Smallwood Interpretation Centre. Full details of the Soiree '99 activities will be unveiled in St. John's and Gambo on March 31, 1999, the exact date of the 50th anniversary.

The New Year's Eve event at the Gambo Fire Hall features entertainment, food, music, fireworks and a laser light show to celebrate the start of the Soiree '99 year. Local dignitaries and elected officials from the area and from other parts of the province are expected to attend the Gala, which is open to the general public. On January 2 in Gambo, there will also be a special Youth Gala for the young people in the area.
