Minister Furey pleased with new portfolio

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, says he is pleased with his new responsibilities and is looking forward to furthering the province's significant tourism, cultural, and recreational heritage potential.

"The opportunities related to the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and the impact it has on the province's economy and its people are unlimited. I am looking forward to the challenge of continuing to promote the province's tourism and heritage potential on the international stage," said Furey.

Minister Furey noted there are many important issues facing the department and government and that he has already identified priorities for the upcoming year. "The successful planning and delivering of the Canada Winter Games, Soiree '99 and the Viking Millenium celebrations will be at the top of my agenda," said Furey. "I also intend to review all policy and planning initiatives to encourage the greatest growth potential for tourism in the province combined with the continued development of sports and recreation, the promotion of the arts and our cultural heritage in the province."

Minister Furey remains a member of the Policy and Planning Committee, Economic Policy Committee, Treasury Board and Chair of the Advertising and Communications Committee. Mr. Furey also takes on the new role of Chair for the Social Policy Committee.
