Peace Tower Carillon will chime to mark historic event

The House of Commons Peace Tower in Ottawa will ring out with some well-known traditional Newfoundland music at 12 noon on December 11, 1998 as another milestone is reached in the province's Confederation anniversary, says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly. It was on December 11, 1948 that Newfoundland and Labrador signed its Terms of Union with Canada, with its status as the nation's 10th province coming into effect just before the stroke of midnight on March 31, 1949. "On Newfoundland and Labrador's first day as a Canadian province, the Peace Tower's carillon rang out with our traditional music," Kelly said.

The minister noted that the Peace Tower's carillon does not play during Holy Week just before Easter, which next year is the week during which Newfoundland and Labrador's 50th anniversary of Confederation will fall.

However, Kelly says that Newfoundland historian Dr. Peter Neary, currently Dean of Social Science at the University of Western Ontario, noted that the December 11 anniversary was equally as important, and asked the Peace Tower's Dominion Carillonneur, Gordon Slater, if he would perform the tunes on that day instead.

"We're delighted that Mr. Slater enthusiastically agreed, and at noon on December 11, Canada's fourth Dominion Carillonneur will perform `The Squid Jiggin' Ground,' and `The Kelligrew's Soiree'," the minister said. Kelly added that the selection of "The Kelligrews Soiree" is particularly appropriate, given that in Newfoundland and Labrador, Soiree means party, and next year the province will hold Soiree '99, featuring an array of celebrations to mark the province's 50th anniversary as a proud member of the Canadian Confederation.
