New marketing initiative announced for winter tourism in Western Newfoundland

Western Newfoundland's outstanding winter tourism products will be extensively promoted this season as a result of a $200,000 marketing initiative announced by Finance Minister Paul Dicks in Corner Brook Wednesday night.

Speaking at the opening of the Atlantic Canada Tourism Showcase, the minister said that under the program, government will provide $100,000 to the Marble Mountain Management Corporation on behalf of the newly-formed Western Newfoundland Visitors and Convention Bureau.

"This $100,000 commitment from the Canada/Newfoundland Agreement on Economic Renewal, stems from a proposal by the Marble Mountain Management Corporation which will be matched by another $100,000 contributed by tourism operators throughout the region," Dicks said.

The project will provide support to the Marble Mountain Management Corporation, and their tourism industry partners, to develop and implement a marketing program focussed on raising awareness of the region's excellent winter tourism products.

"As well, the funding will be a major boost for the area's new Visitors and Convention Bureau, and provide a firm foundation which the bureau can build upon during the winter months," the minister said.

"Marble Mountain is truly a jewel in our winter tourism crown," Dicks said. "Combined with world-class Blomidon cross-country and Cat-skiing and the development of a new network of groomed snowmobile trails, western Newfoundland is emerging as a premier winter tourism destination in eastern Canada."
