The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys and girls 4A slo-pitch this weekend

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation launches its athletic calendar this coming weekend. The first two of 33 provincial championships are being staged Friday and Saturday.

The 4A girls slo-pitch championships are being hosted by Prince of Wales Collegiate in St.John's. Eight teams, playing a two division round robin format, will take part in the tournament which will be played at the Lions Park and Bannerman Park. One division will see action from Pearce Regional High (Burin), Beaconsfield High (St.John's), Roncalli High (Avondale) and Templeton Collegiate (Gilliams). In division two, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Prince of Wales Collegiate (St.John's), Marystown Central High and Clarenville Integrated. The tournament begins with a tournament breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by round robin games at 10 a.m. The top two teams from each division will advance to the semi-finals and championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Lions Park.

Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts will be the host school for the 4Aboys slo-pitch championships. Seven teams have qualified through zone and regional play to advance to the provincial finals. Games get underway at the Bay Roberts softball field at 9 a.m. Friday and continue through Saturday. The top teams will advance to the crossovers with the championship game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Playing in division one will be Ascension Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista) and Regina High (Corner Brook). Division two will be Marystown Central High, Roncalli High (Avondale) and Holy Heart of Mary (St.John's).

The federation awards gold and silver medals for the winning teams, as well as the championship banner. The Keyin Sportsmanship Award will also be presented at each tournament. The slo-pitch championships are sponsored by Keyin College and Newfoundland and Labrador School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador.
