Provincial parks to offer winter camping and camping unit storage

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that persons wishing to camp or store their camping equipment in a provincial park during the 1998/99 winter season may do so at Butter Pot or Notre Dame Provincial Parks. These are the only provincial parks in which these services will be offered.

As both parks are closed for the 1998 season, persons wishing to access one of these parks for either purpose should contact park staff directly, between 8:00 a.m and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, by telephoning Butter Pot at (709) 685-1853 or Notre Dame at (709) 535-2379.

Campsites will be available on a first come first served basis for a fee of $175, while camping equipment may be stored for a fee of $100. Upon payment of the applicable fee camping equipment may be placed on a designated campsite or in storage from October 1998 to May 1999.

Those wishing to camp or store their equipment in either park during the winter season should note that some security will be provided; however, government accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, theft or vandalism. In addition, equipment located in the storage area cannot be used for camping purposes and all camping equipment must be removed from each park prior to its 1999 opening date.

Campers will be provided with access to firewood and pit privies, but they must provide their own water and remove any garbage from the park.

As the gates to these parks will be closed and locked, equipment on campsites and in storage is to be accessed by hiking, skiing or snowshoeing. Motorized off road vehicles, including snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles, are not permitted in provincial parks. Park roads will not be cleared of snow; however a cleared area will be provided to permit vehicle parking off the highway.

Minister Kelly invites everyone to partake of this opportunity to extend the camping season to its maximum, and to pursue healthy outdoor activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing or bird watching.
