Sixteen new works pending through Publishers' Assistance Grant

A total of 16 new book publications are planned for 1999 thanks to a $100,000 provincial government grant to the Newfoundland and Labrador Publishers Association, says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly.

"On May 4 of this year, government signed a memorandum of understanding with the province's four major publishing companies: Breakwater Books Ltd, Creative Book Publishing Ltd., Harry Cuff Publications Ltd., and Jesperson Publishing, which comprise the Newfoundland and Labrador Publishers' Association," Kelly said. "The agreement commits $100,000 over the current fiscal year towards design and printing requirements and will see 16 new works being issued by the four publishing companies."

Kelly noted that virtually all the pending works focus on cultural, recreational or historical elements of Newfoundland and Labrador, and will be timely enhancements to the province's Soiree '99 celebrations next year.

"Books play a key role in reflecting our rich culture and heritage, and I am very pleased to be able to assist with these new publications as we enter another exciting year of celebrations for Newfoundland and Labrador," she added.

Selecting works for publication under the assistance program was left to the discretion of each publishing company, with the requirements that each work be about Newfoundland and Labrador, or by a Newfoundland and Labrador author. Each of the four companies has committed to publish and release four new works next year.

Kelly said that while this year's program is an interim measure, the Newfoundland and Labrador Publishers' Association, in conjunction with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will undertake a strategic planning process to assess future opportunities and challenges, including long-term support requirements.
