The following is being distributed on behalf of the Creoula Project

Canadian youth return home from Creoula voyage

The second group of 25 young Canadians who participated in the Creoula Project will arrive in St. John's on Friday, September 25. They are scheduled to arrive at 5 p.m. in the main terminal of St. John's airport from where they will disperse to their homes throughout the province.

This group of young people reported for training in mid-August and since then have been totally immersed in the Creoula project. Following eight days of safety and seamanship training at the Marine Institute, they participated in six days of activities in St. John's and Bonavista together with the other 75 Canadian and Portuguese youth who arrived in Newfoundland on the first leg of the Creoula voyage.

On September 1 they set sail aboard the Creoula for Portugal and despite some very rough weather courtesy of Hurricane Danielle they arrived in Aveiro, Portugal on schedule on September 20. They were met by a large crowd including the Portuguese Minister of Defence, and Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly representing the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Following a few days of sightseeing in Portugal including a visit to Expo'98, they are now returning home, the last step in a great project.

"The cultural exchange between the young people of Canada and the young people of Portugal was the foundation of the Creoula Voyage," said Minister Kelly. "It was a great opportunity for the youth of both countries to learn of the shared marine history which exists between

Portugal and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador."

"This was a great opportunity for all the youth who participated and I am sure they will carry the memories the rest of their lives," said Project Manager Ken Corbett.

On behalf of the project, Corbett expressed deep thanks to all the government departments and corporate sponsors who supported the project, especially the federal departments of Human Resources Development Canada, and the Department of National Defence, the provincial departments of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Human Resources and Employment, and from the private sector Sobeys and Vector Aerospace.

Corbett extended a special thank you to the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador for the great assistance they provided in helping coordinate the project in Newfoundland and Labrador.
