The following is being distributed at the request of 1999 Canada Winter Games Host Society: Royal Bank Canada Games Caravan launching in two weeks Corner Brook, site of the 1999 Canada Winter Games, will be the first to sample the Royal Bank Canada Games Caravan. The official launch is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at the Valley Mall. The Royal Bank Canada Games Caravan will be in Corner Brook for a single day before departing for St. John's and its extensive five month Atlantic Canada pre-Games tour. Royal Bank is a major sponsor of the 1999 Games and title sponsor of the tour as it brings a piece of the 1999 Canada Games spirit to communities outside of Corner Brook and Western Newfoundland. The official launch will mark an elaborate excursion that will include stops throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I, and Newfoundland before returning to Western Newfoundland for the duration of the games. The caravan will travel to 16 major shopping centres, over 30 schools, four Quebec Major Junior Hockey games and three American Hockey League games. "The Royal Bank Canada Games Caravan provides an opportunity for our branches to play a meaningful role by promoting the 1999 Canada Winter Games and the Royal Bank Box Office program to all regions of Atlantic Canada," said Derek Rose, area manager for central and western Newfoundland. The caravan provides an interactive environment which includes high profile Olympic and Canada Games athletes sharing their athletic experiences. Included in the tour is an interactive sport exhibit involving the Top Shot hockey system similar to that featured at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Children of all ages, from six to 96, will have an opportunity to test their hockey skills. The public is also invited to sign the Caravan Guest Book in support of the provincial/territorial athletes competing in the games. Over 750 Canadian communities are expected to be represented at the games in Corner Brook. The Royal Bank Canada Games Caravan was developed by the Canada Games Council in conjunction with the 1999 Canada Winter Games Host Society.
