Usage up, new programs offered at provincial parks

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that a preliminary survey conducted by the department indicates that overall campsite registration is up this year over the same period last year, for parks within the provincial system.

"I'm pleased that our parks are attracting such strong numbers," Minister Kelly said. "With still three weeks to go before the school year begins, and seven weeks until the close of the camping season, my department is anticipating even greater increases."

A comparison of all camping units registered up to August 2, 1998 indicates use is up 5.4 per cent over the same period in 1997. To celebrate this successful season, the department has designated August as "Visitor Appreciation Month," to be highlighted by special events and give-aways at each location.

The Parks and Natural Areas Division of the department has several new initiatives that continue to demonstrate the province's commitment to preservation and environmental education. "Parks as Nature's Classroom" is a joint project with the Department of Education, and is one of the first of its kind in Canada that combines school teachings with the parks environment to enhance understanding of our natural treasures. This project has been two years in development, and is set to get underway this fall.

The division has also produced new videos outlining the educational and recreational activities available in the province's parks and reserves. The videos are aimed at young people and features them learning and doing things in these protected areas.
