Court Injunction to be served on Cape St. Mary's protesters

Protesters blocking the public road to the Cape St. Mary's Seabird Sanctuary are to be served with a Court Injunction ordering them to cease this illegal activity. The injunction was obtained from the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland around mid-day August 14 and is expected to be served later in the day.

"The Cape St. Mary's Seabird Sanctuary is a key ecological attraction, and is the anchor for many tourism businesses on the southern Avalon," says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly. "We cannot condone actions that jeopardize the success of local jobs and businesses and threaten to tarnish our tourism image as a whole."

Kelly noted the issues which are at the core of the protest have nothing to do with the Seabird Sanctuary, and are still under review by relevant funding agencies.

"A detailed assessment of the Branch fish plant initiative continues, and undermining local tourism ventures in the meantime will not accelerate any positive resolution of the issue," Kelly added.
