Remaining provincial parks open for 1998 season

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the remaining four of the province's 14 provincial parks, in which camping is permitted, will open on Friday, June 12 for the 1998 summer season.

The parks to open, with the number of available campsites listed in parentheses are: Blow Me Down (28); Dildo Run (55); Lockston Path (55); and Pistolet Bay (30). The province's six Natural and Scenic Attraction Parks will also open for the season on June 12. They are: The Arches; Cataracts; Codroy Valley; Deadman's Bay; Dungeon; and Gooseberry Cove.

This announcement means that all of the province's 20 provincial parks and the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve will be open as of June 12 for the 1998 season.

Campsite vacancy and special event information for the province's provincial parks in which camping is permitted, with the exception of Chance Cove, as well as special event information for the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve, may be obtained from anywhere in North America by telephoning 1-800-866-CAMP. Within the St. John's telephone exchange the number is (709) 570-7573. This information will be updated twice on Thursday and Friday and once on Saturday until September 5.

Campsite reservations for the parks in which camping is permitted, with the exception of Chance Cove, may be made by telephoning 1-800-866-CAMP, (709) 570-7573 or 1-800-563-NFLD. Additional information regarding the province's system of provincial parks, wilderness and ecological reserves can be obtained by telephoning (709) 729-2424.

Minister Kelly invites everyone to discover, explore and experience the natural environment of this province's provincial parks, including the cascading waterfall and deep river gorge at Cataracts, the natural rock archway at the Arches, the salmon pools and Big Falls at Sir Richard Squires Memorial and Barachois Pond's Erin Mountain with its five kilometre hiking and nature study trail offering a spectacular view of the park.

Minister Kelly wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable summer and asks that all park users help protect the natural environment of all of these special places for the benefit of present and future generations.
