Arts and Letters Competition winners announced
Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to
announce the winning entrants in the 46th annual Provincial Arts and Letters Competition.
The awards ceremony took place at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre on Thursday, June
4.
"The competition is one of my department's oldest and most important
annual initiatives, and it has continued to prosper and thrive in these times of fiscal
restraint," Minister Kelly said. "Again this year, more than a thousand people
submitted entries. That's truly a significant number."
There are two divisions in the competition; Junior (ages 12 to 18) and
Senior (age 19 and over). The three categories in the Junior division are: Poetry, Prose
and Visual Art. The first place prize for each category is $300, with a $200 prize for
second place and $100 for third place.
In the senior division there are eight categories: Poetry; Fictional
Prose/Short Story; Non-fictional Prose; Dramatic Script; Musical Composition; Painting and
Three Dimensional Art; Drawing and Graphic Art; Photography. The first place prize for
each category is $600, with a $300 prize for second place and $150 for third place.
A full list of winners and honourable mentions in each of the categories
can be found below. Entries to the Arts and Letters Competition closed on Friday, March 6,
1998. Funding for the program is provided by the Cultural Affairs Division of the
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
An exhibition of winning entries and other selected entries in the Visual
Arts category is currently on display at the Provincial Art Gallery until June 14.
Minister Kelly joins with the Arts and Letters Committee in encouraging
entries for 47th annual competition to be held next year. The early deadline for entries
is March 05, 1999.
