Concorde visit underscores tourism interest

The charter of an Air France Concorde for an excursion to Newfoundland and Labrador underscores the growing awareness and enthusiasm for the accessible tourism experiences which can be found in the province, says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly.

The Concorde is scheduled to arrive in St. John's at 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 as part of a charter excursion to the province by Gallic Aviation of France. Gallic Aviation is the largest air charter cruise company in France.

"Ninety-nine people have signed up for the Gallic Aviation opportunity to come to Newfoundland and Labrador to sample our icebergs, whales, and incredible natural scenery, while also taking a side trip by air to St. Pierre," Kelly says. "Word is getting out that the hundreds of icebergs which parade past out coastlines each spring and early summer are truly worth seeing."

Minister Kelly noted that her department, in partnership with Transport Canada and the City of St. John's Economic Development and Tourism office will host a reception for the tour participants on Saturday morning at City Hall.

The minister added that the National and International enthusiasm for Newfoundland and Labrador's unique natural and cultural tourism experiences was very evident at the Tourism Media Marketplace in Toronto this month, and shows no sign of abating.

"The bottom line is Newfoundland and Labrador is being acclaimed as a sought-after, exotic, adventurous and above all accessible vacation experience," she added.

The Concorde will remain at St. John's Airport over the weekend, and depart on Monday, June 1 at 3:15 p.m.
