High School Athletic Federation Award Winners

The winners and runners-up for the High School Athletic Federation Annual Awards have been named by Awards Chairman, Mr. Wayne Lee. All winners and runners-up have been invited to accept their awards at the banquet, held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting, Friday, May 29, at the Battery Hotel in St. John's.

The Coach of the Year for 1997-98 is Derek Locke from Templeton Collegiate, Corner Brook. Between April 1997 and March 1998, the Templeton Collegiate wrestling team coached by Locke has had incredible success. They have dominated regional and provincial wrestling competitions including high school championships, invitational meets, age group championships and the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games. At the high school championships they took 10 gold, three silver and one bronze, out of a total possible of 17, and in the age group championships, out of six divisions, Templeton placed first in five and second in one. In addition, his athletes made up six of the 10 wrestlers on the provincial Canada Games team with one wrestler taking home a bronze medal. Runners-up for the award were Bob Alcock from Roncalli High in Avondale and Ron Blair from J. C. Erhardt in Makkovik.

The Coaching Service Award is given to an individual in recognition of a long career involvement in coaching high school sports and in developing superior athletic programs. Bob Alcock from Roncalli High in Avondale has been named as the recipient of the award for his 25 year involvement in coaching at the zone, regional and provincial high school level. Throughout his career, Alcock has coached in more than 20 provincial championships in volleyball, basketball and cross country running, winning at least one provincial championship in three decades. In addition, as a volleyball coach, he has won every major invitational tournament in the province at least once. Recently, he has had the most success with his volleyball teams, both boys and girls. This past year his boys team won the 4A championships while his girls team lost in the playoff round. Ed Arnott of Bishops College in St. John's and Wayne Baggs from Greenwood Academy in Milltown are the runners-up.

The Honor Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Federation through many areas of involvement over many years. Jim Feltham from Deer Lake is this years recipient. Feltham is one of the province's most well known and respected basketball coaches. His success on the basketball court include gold and silver medals at the provincial level. In the words of his nominator, "Feltham's most outstanding contribution to school sport is his ability to ensure his student-athletes perform to their potential both on the court and in the classroom. His competitive spirit has been maintained through 28 years of coaching." The runner-ups for the Honor Award are Keith Kelloway from Berney Memorial in Burin and Steve Harris of Glovertown Regional High.

The Brother G. I. Moore Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year are reserved for graduating athletes who best combine the ideals of sportsmanship with both athletic and academic prowess. Newfoundland Power provides a $750 scholarship to the male and female winners.

Jason Keilly form Dunne Memorial Academy is the 1997-98 High School Student-Athlete of the year. Throughout his high school years he has excelled in basketball, softball and badminton. He has been an integral part of many of Dunne Memorial's gold and silver medal winning teams. Kielly is also involved in coaching, refereeing and various school committees. On top of this, he has been an Honor student throughout high school, always in the top three in his class. The runners-up for Male Student-Athlete of the Year are Blair Kennedy from Stella Maris High in Trepassey and Howard Rideout form J. M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate.

Sandi Ennis from Laval High in Placentia is the 1997-98 Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Since 1993-94 Ennis has been involved in basketball, volleyball, cross country running, softball and hockey. She has won many team awards as well as individual sportsmanship and MVP awards. She has been a member of Newfoundland basketball teams since 1994, as a co-captain for the past two years. In addition, she has been named Laval Athlete of the Year for the past three years. Ennis is also involved in numerous community and school organizations as a participant, committee member and volunteer. Throughout her years at Laval, she has maintained a 90 plus average, placing her in the top three per cent of her class. The runners-up for this award were Dorothy Yetman from Dunne Memorial in St. Mary's and Kelly Anderson from J. C. Erhardt Memorial in Makkovik.

Each of the 11 regions in the province will also be presenting a recognition award to an individual in their region for their involvement in the success of high school sports. The winners of the Regional Recognition Awards are as follows: St. John's - Maurice Colbert (Holy Heart of Mary High), Trinity-Conception - Karl Janes (St. Georges High, New Harbour), Avalon South - Patricia Dohey (Fatima Academy, St. Brides), Avalon West - Keith Randell (Bishop White All Grade, Port Rexton), Burin Peninsula - Harold Murphy (Christ the King High, Rushoon), Central East - Arlene Reid (Lakewood Academy, Glenwood), Central - Paul Butt (Botwood Collegiate), Central West - Charlie Barker (Elwood High, Deer Lake), Western - Rick Cook (St. Stephen's, Stephenville), St. Barbe-Labrador - Alonzo Pilgrim and Roy Coffen (Harriot Curtis Collegiate, St. Anthony), and Northern - Joan McLean (Lake Melville High, Northwest River).
