High school sports annual general meeting set

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation will be holding its Annual General Meeting this coming weekend at the Battery Hotel in St. John's. Delegates from all over Newfoundland and Labrador will be in attendance to set specific plans for the 1998-99 school year, as well as to discuss the future of high school sports in general.

Of particular interest will be discussion surrounding the "Strengthening our Partnership" committee. The committee consisting of representatives from N.L.H.S.A.F., NLP/RA, Sport Newfoundland and government was formed to look into ways for organizations involved in the delivery of sport and recreation in the province to work together.

Other topics on the agenda include development of a Volunteer Screening Program in conjunction with Community Services Council, review of sponsorships with Keyin Technical College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers, and review and change to technical standards and Federation policies. As well, the athletic calendar will be set for the 1998-99 school year and tournaments awarded.

Kevin Pittman from St. Lawrence and Rosemary Ryan of Stephenville will remain on the executive of the Federation for another year in the capacities of president and vice-president finance. Positions up for re-election include vice-president tournaments and vice-president administration. The remaining 11 positions are filled by a regional director from each of the 11 regions, who were elected at the spring regional meeting.

Winners and runner-ups for the Federation's five major awards, as well as the 11 regional recognition awards will be honoured at the Awards Banquet, Friday night. Awards to be presented include the coach of the year, coaching service, honour award and Brother G.I. Moore male and female student-athlete of the year awards. The student-athlete of the year awards are also sponsored by Newfoundland Power, who provides a $750 scholarship for each winner.
