The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school track and field this weekend

The final High School Athletic Federation competition of the school year is set to go this coming weekend in Marystown. The High School Athletic Federation will declare the provincial Boys and Girls Track and Field champions.

The meet promises to be very competitive with representation from six regions in the province. A total of 146 athletes will be competing from the following schools. Representing St. John's will be Holy Heart of Mary, Beaconsfield, Brother Rice and Bishops College, O'Donel High and Mount Pearl Senior High from Mount Pearl, Roncalli High from Port Saunders, E. J. Pratt from Northern Bay, Dorset Collegiate from Pilley's Island, Herdman Collegiate from Corner Brook, St. Bernards All Grade, Christ the King High from Rushoon, Jacques Fontaine School from Bay L'Argent, St. Joseph's Academy from Lamaline, Pearce Regional High from Burin Bay Arm and the host, Marystown Central High.

Winning regional teams will compete for the coveted provincial banner. Those individuals finishing in the top three in their respective regional individual events also qualify. In addition to team champions, individual champions will be declared in the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, Medley Relay (100m, 100m, 200m, 400m), 800m, 1500m, 1500mRW, 3000m (Female), 5000m (Male), ShotPut, Javelin, Discus, High Jump and Long Jump.

The competition gets underway 10 a.m. Saturday morning and continues throughout the day. The event is being sponsored by Keyin Technical College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland.
