Promotional effort to highlight Soiree '99

A nationwide touring showcase of Newfoundland and Labrador's rich heritage and tourism products will lead marketing efforts for next year's Soiree '99 celebrations, says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly.

"We will shortly be issuing a request for proposals for the development, implementation and operation of a nation-wide touring exhibit to promote the province during the early part of 1999," the minister said. "Our 50th anniversary of Confederation has an inherent Canadian appeal, and we view the Soiree '99 touring showcase as a key lure in our marketing efforts."

Kelly says the showcase would target leading travel and tourism shows scheduled for major Canadian venues in early 1999, and her department is seeking an eye-catching, novel display which capitalizes on the province=s main tourism icons. The showcase would also seek the participation of corporate sponsors and tourism operators from Newfoundland and Labrador.

The minister says the vision for the showcase is on a very high scale.

"We have concepts in mind that will represent our province and our heritage in a graphically powerful fashion, in terms of the displays and backdrops that we envisage for the exhibit," she said. "Our aim is to see a slice of Newfoundland and Labrador culture, food, music and natural heritage positioned as a powerful tourism lure for our fellow Canadians."

A major feature planned for the showcase is that it will not be limited to displays, information and entertainment, but will be an on-line business initiative. It is intended that patrons visiting the venue will be able to make immediate on-line enquiries and reservations with tourism operators in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"We want this to be not only a striking display, but an interactive venue where Newfoundland and Labrador tourism operators can land real business," Kelly said. "Soiree '99 is another huge opportunity to promote our province, and we're taking the initiative to ensure that opportunity is maximized."

The closing date for the request for proposals for the Soiree '99 travelling showcase is April 30, 1998.
