The following is being distributed at the request the Newfoundland Labrador High Athletic Federation:

Provincial Girls Basketball Tournaments

The second weekend of High School Athletic Federation provincial basketball championships is scheduled for the April 2 - 4 weekend. Thirty-four girls teams have qualified and registered for the tournaments.

The A girls tournament is being hosted by Lakewood Academy in Glenwood. A total of eight teams will compete in the two division event. Division I will feature Lakewood Academy, Our Lady of the Cape High of St. George's, Fitzgerald Academy of English Harbour West and Our Lady Queen of Peace High of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Division 2 will see action from St. Peter's Academy of Westport, St. Joseph's Academy of Bay de Verde, Bonne Bay Academy and St. Mark's All Grade of Port Rexton. A total of 12 round robin games will be played from Lakewood Academy and Gander Collegiate gyms both Thursday, starting at 3 o'clock and all day Friday. Round robin games will be held at 10 a.m. and noon with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday all at Lakewood Academy gym.

The 2A Girls tournament will have 11 teams competing. J. M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate will host the tournament. The teams will be divided into three divisions starting at 9 a.m. Thursday. A total of 15 games will be played with the final championship scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. The following teams have qualified for the tournament. Division A: Fatima High (St. Bride's), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Menihek High of Labrador City. Division B: St. Augustines (Plum Point) the host J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Greenwood Academy (Milltown), and Whitbourne Central High. Division C: St. Lawrence Central High, Deer Lake Pentecostal School, St. John Bosco High (St. John's) and St. Michael's All Grade (Arnold's Cove).

St. Catherine's School of Mount Carmel is the host school for the 3A Girls championships. A total of six teams will be competing for the provincial title. In Division A, St. Catherine's will be competing with St. Michael's High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Fogo Island Central High. Division B teams are Elwood Regional High (Deer Lake), St. Francis High of Harbour Grace and Mobile Central High. Games will be played starting at 9 a.m. Friday and will continue all day. The cross overs being at 9 a.m. Saturday with the championship game set for 4 p.m. Saturday.

The girls 4A championships will be hosted by O'Donel High of Mount Pearl. Nine teams set up in two divisions will compete for the provincial title. In the Green Division O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), Bishops College of St. John's, Regina High of Corner Brook, Gander Collegiate, and Laval High of Placentia. The White Division will see action from Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Holy Heart of Mary of St. John's, Roncalli High (Avondale) and Grand Falls Academy. Games will be played at both O'Donel High and Mount Pearl Senior High gyms. The tournament is set to begin with one game on Wednesday evening between Bishops and Laval, and will continue all day on both Thursday and Friday. The cross overs will be played at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at both gyms and the championship game is scheduled for 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

Keyin Technical College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers are the sponsors of the federation. Keyin will present sportsmanship awards to an individual in each tournament. Zap, the milk mascot will be making an appearance at the 4A Girls tournament in Mount Pearl. The winning team in each tournament will receive the championship banner as well as gold medals.
