The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

High School Hoop Champions to be Declared

Thirty-eight high school boys basketball teams will take to the courts this coming weekend to compete for top honours in four provincial boys basketball tournaments. All teams have advanced through zone and regional play and qualified for the provincial finals.

Lakewood Academy in Glenwood is the host school for the Boys A tournament. Ten schools will be vying for top honours in the event. Division A teams include: the host, Lakewood Academy, Legallais Memorial from Isle aux Morts, Our Saviour King High from Southern Harbour, Goose High of Goose Bay and Point Leamington Academy. Teams in Division B include Holy Name of Mary from Lawn, A. R. Scammell High from Change Islands, St. Peters from Westport, Holy Cross High from Daniel's Harbour and St. Joseph's Central High of Bay de Verde. Round robin play begins Thursday at 10 a.m. and continues all day Friday. Cross over games are 10 a.m. and 12 noon Saturday with the championship game set for 4 p.m.

St. Lawrence Central High is the host for the Boys 2A tournament. Ten schools will be competing in the two division round robin event. Competing in the Blue Division are: the host St. Lawrence Central High, Greenwood Academy of Milltown, Garrigus All Grade of St. Lunaire, Belanger Memorial of Doyles, Holy Trinity Central High of Norman's Cove. White Division teams include, Dunne Memorial of St. Mary's, Central West Representative , St. Michael's High of Arnolds Cove, Riverwood Academy of Wings Point and the wildcard team St. Joseph's of Lamaline. Games begin 1 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day Friday. Cross over games are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday with the championship game set for 2 p.m.

Twelve teams have qualified for the 3A tournament hosted by Fatima High of St. Bride's. Teams are divided into four divisions. Division A teams include: Fatima High, Marystown Central High and Bursey Memorial. Division B - Fogo Island Central High, St. Catherines Academy, Harriott Curtis Collegiate. Division C - St. Francis High of Harbour Grace, Mobile Central High, Baie Verte High. Division D - Menihek High of Labrador City, Musgravetown High School and St. James High of Port aux Basques. Play begins Thursday at 9 a.m. and will continue all day Friday. Cross overs will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday with the championship game slated for 3 o'clock.

The boys 4A is hosted by Stella Maris High of Trepassey. Eight teams will compete for the coveted provincial banner. The Gold Division teams include; Holy Heart of Mary of St. John's, O'Donel High of Mount Pearl, Gander Collegiate and Grand Falls Academy. The banquet will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. Round robin play continues all day Friday with the cross overs and championship game on Saturday.

Keyin Technical College and the School Milk Foundation are sponsors of the federation's provincial tournaments. Keyin will provide the Keyin Sportsmanship Awards. All winning teams will be given gold medals and the provincial banner. Silver medals will also be presented, as well as foul shooting trophies presented.
