Book Documents Dramatic Trek of Newfoundland Flotilla '97

Last Year's Cabot 500 Celebrations continue to pay exposure dividends for Newfoundland and Labrador with the release of a book detailing the Newfoundland Flotilla's trek to the province last year.

Entitled "The Millennium Arrives - the Journey of the Newfoundland Flotilla 97," the illustrated book was written by Gerta Woodberry, who skippered the yacht "Millennium II" from Toronto to Bonavista to meet the Matthew.

"The Newfoundland Flotilla was a wonderful complement to our Cabot 500 Anniversary Celebrations," says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly. "What started out as a project by Newfoundland native Bob O'Brien to send a yacht from Toronto's National Yacht Club to meet the Matthew turned into an 83-boat strong flotilla heading for Bonavista."

Kelly noted that the Flotilla was an incredible addition to the celebrations. The sailors fostered a huge amount of national media exposure for the province's 500th anniversary as they made their way down the St. Lawrence to their first Newfoundland landfall at Isle aux Morts.

"When you consider that the Flotilla was an independent venture, undertaken and sustained by the spirit of the participants, there's no question they are to be thanked and commended for their Cabot 500 interest and support," she added.

Woodberry, the only female skipper in the Flotilla, offers a detailed account of the entire trip, from their Official Sailpast and departure from Toronto on May 10, to their arrival in Bonavista where the Flotilla formed an incredible backdrop for the Matthew's arrival.

The book also tells a wonderful tale of the outstanding hospitality which awaited the Flotilla members at all Newfoundland ports of call.

"The Millennium Arrives - Journey of the Newfoundland Flotilla '97" is published by Cantick Quoin Marketing, Inc. of Topsail, Newfoundland, and will be released at Mimico Cruising Club in Toronto on the Evening of January 16th. It will be available at bookstores throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
