Southlands Development Report Presented to Government

The feasibility report relating to the future municipal jurisdiction of the Southlands Development has been presented to government.

The report, which was prepared by Dr. F. W. Russell, was presented to Premier Brian Tobin and Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Art Reid at Confederation Building at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 1998.

Mr. Reid said the report will now be the subject of a review and that, upon completion of the review, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Cabinet for a decision.

Mr. Reid added: "I do not think it would be appropriate for me to publicly comment on the findings and recommendations of Commissioner Russell until such time as a decision is taken by Government."

Dr. Russell was appointed in October of 1997 to study and report on the future of the municipal jurisdiction of the Southlands Development.

Commissioner Russell held consultations in St. John's and Mount Pearl and in all some 40 submissions were made during the public hearings process.
