Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to build new powerhouse in Nain Charles Furey, Minister of Mines and Energy, announced today that Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro will be constructing a new powerhouse in Nain to replace an existing aging facility as part of its 1999 Capital Plan. The new powerhouse will be designed to accommodate the three existing generator units and provide an extra engine bay for future load growth. The new powerhouse will be constructed for a cost of $3.1 million. The current powerhouse was built by Northern Labrador Services in 1974, under emergency conditions, to replace a facility that was destroyed by fire. The powerhouse was turned over to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro in 1975. The capacity of the current system is 2,640 KW which includes: two 820KW units and one of 1,000KW. "It is the intention of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to use the diesels engines which are relatively new and in good working condition," said Furey. "The present forecast does not anticipate any additional generation capacity until 2007. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro will install a fourth diesel generator when the demand has increased to justify it." Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro are currently in the preliminary stages of defining the functional requirements for the powerhouse. Engineering and construction work will be initiated in 1999 with completion of the plant expected in 2000. Contact:
