Minister pleased with PanCanadian's intention to drill a well on Port au Port Peninsula

Charles Furey, Minister of Mines and Energy, is pleased that drilling could soon resume on the province's west coast. PanCanadian Petroleum has submitted preliminary documentation towards obtaining approval to drill a well at Shoal Point in late 1998 or early 1999. The exploration well is planned to be drilled directionally from an onshore to offshore location beneath the Port au Port Bay.

Minister Furey is pleased that further exploration is planned on the west coast, considering current low oil prices. "It's great to see that drilling activity is resuming in this area. The Port au Port # 1 well confirmed the presence of oil and gas in the area and further exploration is needed to determine how much is there."

Kevin Aylward, MHA - St. George's - Stephenville East, also welcomed the news of PanCanadian's plans. "I am delighted to see PanCanadian return to the west coast of the province. I look forward to positive results in regard to this project."

"This is certainly welcome news for the area, as it has been a while since there has been any drilling on the west coast. This is a real signal of interest, and hopefully the exploration will pay off. I am optimistic that this area will become a part of the oil producing economy in the near future," said Gerald Smith, MHA - Port au Port.
