Minister pleased with announcement to proceed with Hammerdown Gold Project

Charles Furey, Minister of Mines and Energy, says that he is very pleased with today's announcement by Major General Resources Limited and McWatters Mining Inc. to proceed with the further development of the Hammerdown Gold Project in Green Bay - near Springdale.

Furey said: "The Hammerdown deposit is a small but high grade gold deposit which should be capable of supporting an underground mine and milling facility similar to the very successful Nugget Pond gold mine currently operating on the Baie Verte Peninsula.

"I am confident that the partnership between Major General Resources and McWatters Mining Inc. will promptly move this project through the feasibility stage in the next 12 months and mining development in the following year. If all goes well, the mine will produce refined gold bars at the site in a similar manner to the Nugget Pond Mine."

Graham Flight, MHA - Windsor-Springdale, said: "This is good news for the communities in central Newfoundland particularly Springdale and King's Point. I believe that the mining industry can play a key role in the revitalization of such communities in rural Newfoundland and in particular this will have a very positive effect on the economy of Springdale."

Major General Resources Limited is a Vancouver based mineral exploration company. McWatters Mining Inc. is based in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and is involved in gold mining and exploration.
