No change to government policy requiring archaeological
screening /assessment for mineral exploration in Labrador

The Department of Mines and Energy regulations state that any person or organization wishing to conduct exploration in Labrador must apply for exploration approval. Upon receipt of an application, the Department of Mines and Energy refers the application to the Historic Resources Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation as well as to other organizations including the LIA and the Innu Nation.

Based on the information gathered, a government archaeologist determines whether an archaeological assessment is required prior to the issuance of a permit.

This policy has not changed and is not currently under review.
