(Justice)

The following statement was issued today by Chris Decker, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

As the members of the House will recall, government committed in the Throne Speech on March 18, 1998 to provide the Ground Search and Rescue Units in this province with the resources they need to carry our their duties. On March 23, 1998 government announced a $50,000 grant would be provided to the Newfoundland and Labrador Ground Search and Rescue Association. The association is made up of 27 teams throughout the province.

Government also committed to give these volunteers the support and recognition they deserve as they play a very critical role in our society when it comes to locating missing citizens.

I would like to acknowledge Mr. Harry Blackmore, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association and some members of his team who are in the gallery today.

Today, I am pleased to advise the House that the Ground Search and Rescue Association will now have a direct link to the Department of Justice. They will have a voice within government and we will be listening very closely to what they have to say.

The Ground Search and Rescue Association has a very close working relationship with both police forces in the province. We have every confidence that the volunteer searchers along with the police forces

provide the best circumstances for finding missing people as quickly as possible.

That is why the Department of Justice is very interested in working with the Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association to ensure they are well prepared and equipped to carry out the searches when called upon to so.

We look forward to working together with them in the future and sincerely hope they continue to have such an impressive success rate of locating the missing people.
