Unified Family Court to receive a second judge

A new Federal court judge will be appointed to the Unified Family Court in Newfoundland and Labrador to allow for the expansion of the Unified Family Court in this province.

Once the new judge has been appointed, the jurisdiction of the Unified Family Court will be expanded to include the remainder of the Avalon Peninsula and the Bonavista Peninsula. This will allow many more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to access the Unified Family Court and the services the court provides.

"We are pleased by this announcement because the addition of a judge in the Unified Family Court has been something we identified to the Federal government as a necessity. A second judge will help to ease the burden of a very busy court system," said Minister of Justice Chris Decker.

Unified Family Court is a single place where families can go to address all of their legal issues. The province has been working with the Federal government for some time on issues related to this expansion. The province hopes that families will see resolution to their problems in a more timely and less stressful way.

"We look forward to the appointment of this new judge in the near future so this expansion can be fully realized," said the minister.
