Labrador Correctional Centre Opens Extension Classroom Justice Minister Chris Decker officially opened a new wing today at the Labrador Correctional Centre. The extension is a self contained building consisting of two rooms and is located outside but within the fenced perimeter of the main institution. The 20 x 40 structure is deemed a much needed addition to the correctional centre. "I am extremely pleased to be here today to open this new classroom. It is clear that the Centre needed additional space and the new rooms will provide those areas where training and rehabilitation can take place," said Minister Decker. One room is equipped with computers and will be used as a classroom while the other will house rehabilitative programs and sessions such as anger management. Both will be of benefit to the improvement and rehabilitation of the inmates of the centre. The funding for the construction of the centre
extension was provided by the International Grenfell Association,
the Department of Justice, the Mennonite Central Committee, the F.W. Morrow Foundation and Noranda Mining and Exploration Inc.
Labour was not a significant cost consideration because the
structure was built by offenders in the "I commend the correctional centre staff and inmates on making this new building a reality. It has been a successful project which will allow for improved programs and services at the centre," said Minister Decker. The building was officially openedd today following three years of planning and construction.
