Exporting key part of business as company expands operations

Following a recent tour of Atlantic Minerals Ltd., Judy Foote, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology, said she is pleased that the company is expanding its operations in Lower Cove on the Port au Port peninsula.

"This is another great example of a successful business in Newfoundland and Labrador building on its strengths, looking at outside markets for new business, and injecting new money into the provincial economy," said Minister Foote. "Atlantic Minerals Ltd. is shipping its product throughout Eastern Canada and to other markets around the world. Its success in the export market clearly indicates that Atlantic Minerals Ltd., like many other exporting companies throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, has high quality products to offer in the global marketplace."

October will be a very busy month for Atlantic Minerals Inc. and its 80 full-time employees. Its customers, from all parts of the world including Venezuela, Mexico, Trinidad, Brazil and the United States, have ordered their winter supply, which means that six or seven shipments are required by the end of the month. Added to the high demand for product, the company is also busy expanding its storage area and extending its stacker that transports the product to the final storage area before shipping.

Minister Foote toured the expansion area, and noted the highly professional work being done by the 20 workers hired by the contractor. "The methodical and logical approach to the expansion is a testament to the professional work of these employees. They are yet another example of the people who make up the strong, reliable, skilled workforce in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Atlantic Minerals Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newfoundland Cement Company, operates for nine to 10 months during the year. During the remaining months, the company carries out maintenance and repair operations.

The company produces limestone, dolomite and aggregates. The products are used by customers in a number of ways - for scrubbing stacks in power plants, for water treatment, and in the production of iron ore pellets, quick-lime, and steel. Many of the uses allow processes to be carried out in a more environmentally friendly way.
