Provincial Export Award winners announced

EDM Consultants, Fishery Products International, Newtel Information Solutions Limited, and Zeddcom are winners of the 1998 Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards. The winners of the awards were announced today by Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Judy Foote. Minister Foote will present the winning representatives with the awards at a luncheon co-sponsored by the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters on September 29 at Hotel Newfoundland.

"We are developing a very strong export community in the province and it is reflected in the continued growth we have seen in all areas but particularly the manufacturing, fishing and information technology sectors. This shows that more of our companies are taking that step towards looking beyond our borders for new opportunities in the global marketplace. Through these awards, we recognize the efforts of our top exporters and encourage potential exporters to consider new markets for their products and services."

The awards have changed in format from previous years to reflect a new focus and mirror the Canada Export Award program. In the past, the competition treated all sales outside the province as exports, and firms were eligible to apply after exporting for just two years. Nominees now must have sales in markets outside Canada and have been exporting for at least three years to qualify for the awards. Another change this year is the elimination of categories. This year there will be four winners, with criteria aligned with federal standards that will position provincial award winners among the top exporters in the country to be considered for the Canada Export Awards.

Minister Foote also announced a new partnership with the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Newfoundland. This is the first year that the Department of Industry, Trade and Technology will be co-sponsoring a luncheon in September with the local chapter of the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters to honour the winners of the 1998 Export Awards. Another first is that this year's Newfoundland and Labrador Export Award winners will be promoted at the national conference of the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Canada in October.

On Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at the Hotel Newfoundland (Salon B), the Department of Industry, Trade and Technology and the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Newfoundland are jointly hosting a luncheon for this year's winners of the Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards.

Media representatives are invited to attend - lunch will be provided. A reception with cash bar will take place at 12 p.m., with lunch to follow at 12:30 p.m.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology Judy Foote will present the awards to this year's winners.
