Province leads Canadian delegation to Norway

Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Judy Foote will lead a delegation of businesses and government representatives from Canada to the Offshore Northern Seas conference being held in Stavanger, Norway from August 25-28.

"Offshore Northern Seas is one of the world's most influential shows in the offshore petroleum sector. It is a valuable opportunity for our companies to strengthen existing business ties and to develop new ones in the oil and gas sector," said Minister Foote.

Newfoundland and Labrador will lead this year's Canadian delegation, consisting of about 75 people from companies and organizations based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Alberta. Twenty-seven businesses and organizations from Newfoundland and Labrador will attend.

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Norway in 1989, several local companies have established joint ventures with Norwegian companies. Crane Supply, a Newfoundland company, and Stavanger Rorhandel of Norway paired up to provide pipes, fittings and valves for the Hibernia project. Other successful ventures exist between EJE Trans Lite Inc. of Newfoundland and the Norwegian company Jotron Electronics, and between Pennecon of Newfoundland and Ugland of Norway.

"We have been very successful in developing a solid business relationship with Norway. I think the size of this year's delegation signifies the interest our businesses have in strengthening that relationship," said Minister Foote.

While in Norway, Minister Foote will visit the Troll Platform and tour the Bergen research facility, both hosted by Norsk Hydro. Norsk Hydro is now a partner in three of the province's major projects, Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose, and has established offices in St. John's.
