Computer Company Receives EDGE Status

New Canadian Computer Manufacturer Inc. (NCCM) is the latest company to qualify for incentives available under the province's Economic Diversification and Growth Enterprises (EDGE) program. Melvin Penney, MHA - Lewisporte, made the announcement today on behalf of Judy Foote, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology.

NCCM is currently located in Toronto, but received EDGE status for its plans to expand its operation to Lewisporte to serve as its main branch for export sales. NCCM assembles computers, including desktops, laptops and voice mail systems, using established brand name components, which it distributes throughout North America. The company is also achieving success in developing new markets in Europe, Estonia, Asia and the Middle East.

Kevin Akvan, President of NCCM, said: "Computer usage is increasing in homes, businesses and throughout all sectors of the economy, thus the potential market for NCCM is both large and growing at a significant rate. Expanding to Lewisporte will mean production costs can be streamlined and create a lower wholesale price per system."

"Information technology is a sector of the economy that is experiencing dynamic growth. NCCM is taking advantage of this opportunity by combining competitive pricing and high quality standards to capture a share in this ever-growing market," said Mr. Penney. "Today's announcement proves that the incentives available under the EDGE program can encourage the development and expansion of businesses in rural areas of the province as well."

The company expects to employ approximately 20 people in its first year of operations, including electronics specialists, a technical supervisor, an electronics engineer and a shipping technician.

Companies designated with EDGE status are eligible for tax holidays, Crown land for a nominal fee and access to a facilitator who will help obtain the required permits and licences associated with start up or expansion.
