(Justice)

The following is being distributed at the request of Human Rights Commission:

December 10, 1998, marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This very important document sets out a statement of principles which ratifying countries strive to achieve for their citizens.

In honour of the 50th annivesary, human rights commissions, various levels of government and non-government organizations alike are celebrating around the world.

At home, the Newfoundland Human Rights Commission will gather at the commission office to celebrate the event. To mark this significant anniversary, the commission has published an Annotated Human Rights Code and launched a World Wide Web site.

The address for the home page is www.gov.nl.ca/hrc/ and the commission invites you to visit and browse their site. At this address one can link to other Human Rights Commissions in Canada and many other human rights related sites, including case law. The annotated version of the Human Rights Code is designed to assist people in better understanding the provisions of the legislation. It is a clear, concise version of the code with explanations of each provision in plain simple language. The annotated version of the code can be found under Publications on the commissions's home page.
