Single Parent Family Week recognized

Julie Bettney, Minister of the Department of Human Resources and Employment, joined single parents and the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland (SPAN) today to recognize Single Parent Family Week. A reception was held at Pearlgate Manor in Mount Pearl.

"Parents face many challenges today when it comes to raising children. Single parents have the added responsibility of being the sole caregiver for their families," said Minister Bettney. "This week acknowledges the efforts of single parents and credits them for the work they do all year round."

Single Parent Family Week, which runs from October 18-24, recognizes the efforts of single parents throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in raising their families. Along with single parents and their children, representatives from SPAN also attended the event.

"Single Parent Family Week is all about giving single parent families the credit they deserve," said Margaret Acreman, executive director of SPAN. "Single parents work so hard throughout the year to provide for their families, it's nice to see their efforts noticed by others."

Minister Bettney said her department and SPAN are working to help improve the lives of single parent families. "The partnership between the Department of Human Resources and Employment and SPAN is just one example of how successful we can be in meeting the needs of clients when government and community agencies work in cooperation," said Minister Bettney. "By working together, everyone benefits."
